Chapter Eighteen

Mac finished lacing up his ridiculous pants—leather again—and pulled on the shirt Javier had left for him. Going down to the party and mingling with a crowd of people like Gwendolyn and Lucien was the last thing he wanted to do, but he couldn’t leave Jenny alone. An hour, she’d promised, and he’d hold her to it.

He started to turn for the door and checked himself at the last second. So far the searches he’d run had brought him nothing suspicious, but it didn’t hurt to check one more time. None of the alerts he’d placed on the checkpoints had shown anything, either.

It should have comforted him, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d missed something important. There was no reason to link the native attack to Sanctify, and he was all too aware of running the risk of blaming all the attacks on the known threat. And yet…

He went back to his comm unit and pulled up the most recent reports that had come through Sanctify’s main server. A secondary colony founded on Psrida. A high-profile target taken out. A trio of warships deployed to T-II. Another trio sent to T-IV.

Mac frowned, his fingers flying over the holo-keyboard. That couldn’t be right. Those warships had been sent to T-II days ago to pick him up. Why would they send another group? And, for that matter, why the hells would they be sending troops to T-IV? It was a prison planet. Sanctify had never held an interest there.

He dug deeper, pulling the code from the message regarding T-II, comparing it to the original message. On the surface, it seemed identical, but…

The small hairs on the back of his neck stood up.

The code wasn’t the same.

He sat back, steepling his fingers and tapping them to his lips. Sanctify had a handful of decoding algorithms they used when they were trying to fly under the radar—which wasn’t often, admittedly. He leaned closer to the screen and ran each of them against the code of the most recent message.

It fell into place a line at a time.

Three warships

It made sense. They’d copied the first message because it was the same number of troops being deployed.

With the High Priest

He stared. That didn’t make sense. He’d been tracking and decoding Sanctify’s movements for years now, and he’d only ever seen the old High Priest leave the safety of Sanctus three times—all to secure Sanctify’s supremacy over a new planet.

But that was the problem—they weren’t anywhere near taking full control. Nitriph was still fighting with everything it had, and the rebellions didn’t show signs of dying down any time soon.

So why the hells was that bastard traveling so soon after taking over?

To Sisilean.

His entire body went cold. Gods above and below, the High Priest of Sanctify was coming here? Mac scrubbed his hands over his face and ran the algorithm again—and a third time. Nothing changed.

Shit.

He had to tell Jenny. There was still time to get them off-planet if they moved now. Even at top speed, the soonest those warships could be here was three days from now.
